A Rogue in Naxxramas

naxxramasThis is a series of posts covering the role of a rogue (or any melee dps) in the Naxxramas boss fights.

Hopefully rogues are getting their shot at raiding Naxx. I haven’t seen as many rogues as I’d expect in raids. We are not the kings of single-target dps the way we used to be pre-Wrath, but we are definitely serviceable. There are no fights in Naxx that require our interrupts (like Shade did, back in Karazhan). With the new AoE tanking style of raiding, we are not being asked to stun or sap at all during this instance. Our AoE with Blade Flurry (if you are combat spec) and Fan of Knives is just enough to keep us effective on trash pulls.

What we do bring is Tricks of the Trade. This is the new Misdirect. Its not done from range, like the hunter MD, so we don’t use it to do pulls. However, it does give the tank a huge amount of frontloaded threat so there is no need to pause at the start of a fight to wait for aggro.

Also, don’t forget that TotT gives a 15% damage buff to its target. During dps checks like Patchwerk and Thaddius, it is vital to use it whenever it is off cooldown. Our own personal dps is amazing on those bosses, too, since they are stand-and-kill fights.

Naxxramas has five wings, listed below with links to the boss fight posts.

Arachnid Quarter (Spider Wing)

Plague Quarter

Construct Quarter

Military Quarter

Frostwyrm Lair

I am not in Naxx yet, my Rogue is only level 72. However I am a dagger Mutiliate spec in decent gear (Kara purps and some early blue 5 man stuff from Wrath) and was wondering what I need to do to max my DPS at that level to be able to compete.

Just leveling up I am noticing a few things:

I am out DPS’d constantly by DK’s in 5 mans (usually they are 2 levels higher though)

My DPS really is up and down like a yo yo depending on Hunger for Blood, perfect Slice and Dice timing and buffs. Anyway to make this easier?

Are Rogue’s still viable in end game content or do people pass them over?

Slot for hit rating or AP ?

Elitist Jerks helps but it is hard to post there without getting Rickshawed

Get used to being outdpsed by DKs. The only time I’m not trounced by my guilds resident DK is when he is tanking.

Remember envenom/evis refreshes SnD to 5 pt duration. It is possible to Ambush for 1 point then evis/envenom to get a 5 point SnD up.

Rogues are definitely still viable for end game. On my realm, lvl 80 rogues are just as scarce as lvl 80 warlocks. I never have a problem getting into my guild’s naxx 10s. I don’t get in just because of high dps, we have others that could go if theoretical DPS was the only consideration. I’ve done my research, know the fights, and bring my A game every week. Just know you’ll have to work very hard to put out above average DPS. You can’t faceroll to the top of the damage charts anymore, unlike our formerly BM, now SV hunter and HaT friends.

If you have issues watching your timers for SnD, HFB, etc, I might suggest you look into an addon such as classtimers or rogue power bars.

“There are no fights in Naxx that require our interrupts (like Shade did, back in Karazhan).”

You can kick KT frostbolts, though I guess you wouldn’t call it “required”.

@Hudson – generally socketing for AP will be best, or perhaps agility depending on your gear. There’s some great spreadsheets available on EJ that you can plug your gear into and see what will be best for your specific scenario. For mutilate, expertise is also a very strong stat up to the dodge cap.

I agree that a slice timer is useful. Personally I use evl_slice: http://wow.curseforge.com/projects/evl/. If slice or rupture ever drop you have a problem – but everything dies so quick in levelling dungeons its hard even get them up and running before the fight is over ;(

“If slice or rupture ever drop you have a problem”

Oops, that should read “slice or hunger”, of course rupture will drop during a fight. Silly typo.

Our rogues sometimes help out on Gluth by shiving Anesthetic poison to dispel enrages.
It’s handy if you have no hunters, or if you have them but they are slacking :p

@Hudson – I get out-dps’ed by DKs and mages in 5-mans. With only 3-4 bosses I can’t always make up for their AoE damage on trash.

I use Classtimers to watch my various abilities.

Slot for hit rating until you are up near 300, then go for AP or Agility.

@Aeltyr – we always have a hunter so I haven’t had to use this, but I’llmake sure to mention it when I get to the Gluth fight
