DKP reset?

We have been using our fixed cost standard DKP system since our guild started raiding about a year ago.  There is some inflation, as we anticipated when we started using it.  A typical night of raiding earns a player about 8-10 DKP and we have been raiding once or twice a week depending on attendance.  Our most experienced raiders have accumulated over 100 DKP, so they are well ahead of where a new player starts out, but not outrageously so.

We are deciding now if we should reset DKP for WotLK.  We won’t be raiding until we get to level 80, anyway so the DKP won’t be used for a while.  It feels like a good time to reset.  In fact, it feels like a good time to completely revisit our DKP system.  But some people are a little upset at the prospect of losing all the DKP they have accumulated.

Thoughts?

Many raids keep seperate DKP lists for each tier of gear. So Tier 4 was one list, Tier 5 was another, and Tier 6 was entirely another. This avoids some of the problems with inflation since the idea is that you’ll hopefully be progressing as you go along and keeps a level playing field if you juggle the roster when entering a new place.

I like the idea, even though I’m typically the individual with the highest DKP in the raid. I’m the long-time member who tends to pass on gear because I know that the gear will drop again because I’m always there. While I may feel disappointed to see that number — which is an example of the time and effort that I’ve put into the raid — drop back to zero, I know that I’ve gotten and will get what I want in time.

I like that idea, but we since we are casual, would it be too hard to keep track of the different tiers? Would you, Dinaer, or the Raid leader be responsible? Is our DKP system able to distinguish like that? How do you guys keep track of the different tier DKPs, Cynra?

If people aren’t very far ahead, there’s no real reason to reset. On the other hand, there’s something to be said for starting a new expansion with a clean slate.

Reset, while we didnt do a complete reset for each teir, we only gave dkp for the current teir and wrote off most old dkp. So if you had no 1 dkp and 100 dkp at end of t5, at start of t6 you had no 1 dkp but only 10 dkp when each item cost 10 dkp each. As far as I know we are either resetting or minimising old dkp for wotlk.

You could float out offering a different reward to those folks with lots of DKP now. Maybe DKP resets, but everyone with > a certain amount gets a token to treat an alt as a main for loot rolls for one week of their choosing, or a trump card on an otherwise equal loot roll, or one week’s worth of consumables from the vault, or something like that. It lets you do the reset but still reward people who put in the time. It depends, however, on how spread out your DKP points are. If they are evenly distributed from 1-100, then it doesn’t work as well, but if there’s a clump around 20 and a clump around 80, it makes more sense.

Whatever you do, if you do reset your DKP (and I strongly suggest you do), change it to a zero sum system to prevent future problems. Zero-sum means essentially what goes in goes out.

Go with whatever point system you like, bids, auctions, fixed price, whatever. But put in adjustments. Weekly is best monthly is ok. Every week/month you sum all the dkp earned by everyone over that time period and you sum all the dkp spent over that time period. Take the difference (dkp spent minus dkp earned) and average it by the number of people who earned/spent dkp and apply the difference to everyones total.
    Example:
20 people raided this week. 1000 dkp was given out total but only 500 was spent. The net difference is -500. Averaged that is -25 per person. Your system has the same total dkp it had at the start.
Same 20 people raid and again 1000 dkp is awarded but this time 1200 dkp was spent for +200 difference. +10 dkp is awarded to every person.

Adjustments are only applied to people who earned or spent points during that period so there is no problem with taking a break. You have no problems with new people coming in as they are on the same footing as everyone else.

It doesnt really make sense to keep the DKP to me. You never know who is going to show up for raids at the next expansion. If you have someone with a bunch of DKP, they can just wait until you have bosses on farm, then swoop in and take gear that other players that worked hard for.
