Fingers Crossed

I haven’t been able to post for the past couple of days. Number one, I’ve been sick and number two, I’ve been fairly depressed due to the death of my cat who I had for eighteen years. 😦

But tonight its time to put on my game face. For the first time in over 85 days /played, Dinaer will be setting foot into a 25-man raid. I have no idea what to expect.

  • How are trash pulls a challenge for 25 players? Is each trash mob as hard as a Kara boss?
  • How much armor/health will raid bosses have? If it takes 5-8 minutes of continuous dps for 10 players to down Prince Malchezzar, how tough does a raid boss have to be to stand up to 25 players?
  • How long will it take for us to redo buffs after a wipe? It already takes too long in 10-man raids.
  • How hard will it be to go over fight strategies and assignments for such a large group?
  • How can a group of twenty-five fun-loving people be in one Vent channel without it turning into chaos?

I know that a lot of you have already been raiding and have dealt with these issues a long time ago. But this is completely new ground for me and most of the people that I play with.

Another question – how will the morale be if this becomes a wipefest? I don’t want to be negative, but as far as I know neither of the mages in our raid has the stam gear to tank Krosh. If we can’t keep the mage tank alive, then it seems like we’re going to have problems. The last thing I want is for blame to get thrown around and people to feel bad.  Yes – its important to hold players accountable.  Yes – when one person messes up they waste consumables and cause repair bills for 24 others.  But its our first time raiding.  Expectations cannot be set too high.

I remember the first time we went into Karazhan, and we couldn’t kill Attumen. It was disappointing, but no one left feeling badly. We were all joking and laughing about our wipes. That’s the way I want the game to be played, and it is what I hope for in tonight’s attempt on Gruul’s Lair.

Personally, I don’t care if we wipe or not. I’m an explorer at heart. I’m excited to see a part of the game where I have never been. Live or die, loot or not, tonight will be a great time.

Mistakes are going to happen. You probably will wipe. The first fight in Gruul’s is ALL about the pull. Unless someone is just genuinely not paying attention, not focusing and not interested in participating, every player needs to be cut significant slack during first nights in any new content. First nights are going to COST a lot in consumables. It may SEEM like a waste to use food before every pull knowing you’ll probably wipe, but you have to because you need that edge until you have the fight down. For Gruul’s, ensure your raid is using the Unstable Flasks from the BEM area. The Flasks will be invaluable on first nights where you are wiping a lot and even if you have it on farm, they just make the run smoother than without.

Help remind people about common absent-minded possiblities: are you in your PvE (not PvP) gear, do you have the right consumables, are you not wearing your riding crop, are all of your buttons set up correctly. ^_^ As your players become more focused they’ll fall into this habit yourself, but you’d be amazed how often people just forget to do one of those things and it hinders the raid slightly.

How are trash pulls a challenge for 25 players?

Coordination. In Gruul’s trash mostly compromises of Brutes or Priests. Everyone must stay close and behind the Brutes. Priests should be dragged far away from each other and the Brutes.

Is each trash mob as hard as a Kara boss?

Not even close. Trash is still trash, but you can sometimes expect a few deaths from bad luck and overzealous Mages, DPS Warriors and Rogues.

How much armor/health will raid bosses have?

6-8k Armor on most bosses. I can’t even surmise health. See next answer.

If it takes 5-8 minutes of continuous dps for 10 players to down Prince Malchezzar, how tough does a raid boss have to be to stand up to 25 players?

About the same. Hydross, the first boss of SSC, has a 10 minute enrage timer.

How long will it take for us to redo buffs after a wipe? It already takes too long in 10-man raids.

Wipe recovery can be speed up by having coordination and focus.

How hard will it be to go over fight strategies and assignments for such a large group?

I would suggest doing what we have done. Have one central Raid Leader, assign someone to coordinate healing, another for tanking and then another for DPS, etc. Having 4 people split up the duties of managing 25 people and then cooridinate and communicate is very important to making 25-man raids successful.

How can a group of twenty-five fun-loving people be in one Vent channel without it turning into chaos?

Allow some chatter during trash, but once the raid leader is talking there shouldn’t be ANY interruptions or crosstalk over him/her.

Dinaer, I think you have my email address. Feel free to contact me with any other questions.

Health-wise, I think Maulgar has 750k and his adds have around 300k, depending on the adds in question, while Gruul has almost 3.5 million.

As for time, as Valenna said its usually around the same, since while everything has more health theres also more players to kill them. Rebuff times depend alot on the group, though I would estimate for a new group 1-3 minutes, depending on how focused everyone is.

    Oh and have fun 🙂
